What Ryan Gravenberch did when he spotted Liverpool teammate Dominik Szoboszlai before Hungary against Netherlands

More Liverpool players were in action on Friday evening as further international games were ticked off.

The Reds have as many as 16 players away on senior duty for their nations this fortnight and they initially suffered a mixed bag of results.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was not great for England as they suffered a shock defeat to Greece, while Caoimhin Kelleher was criticised despite playing his part in an important win for Ireland.

On Friday, all eyes of a Liverpool persuasion were on Budapest, as Hungary hosted the Netherlands; the only international team with more than one member of the Liverpool squad onboard.

It was not a good night for Virgil van Dijk, who was sent off for two yellow card offences in quick succession.

But as well as Van Dijk’s rare outburst, the game was notable for a midfield matchup between Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Ryan Gravenberch delights in Dominik Szoboszlai battle

Gravenberch has been a revelation at Liverpool this season. Plenty has been said and written about the 22-year-old who has stepped up incredibly under Arne Slot.

One by-product of Gravenberch’s form for the Reds has been that he has also finally nailed down a spot in the Netherlands’ starting XI.

The midfielder was taken to the European Championship in the summer but did not get a single minute of action in Germany.

But his re-emergence at Anfield has convinced Ronald Koeman that he is deserving of a spot alongside Reds teammates Cody Gakpo and Van Dijk.

For Szoboszlai, he has no such worries. The 23-year-old is Hungary’s captain and star man. He plays every game he’s able to.

As a result, Szoboszlai lined up to face three of his Liverpool buddies on Friday, including one of the men he has shared the midfield with to such good effect this term.

And as one fan on X spotted before the game, Gravenberch was delighted to his Liverpool teammate on the pitch before the game.

With the two teams walking along for the customary pre-match handshake, a big smile comes across Gravenberch’s face as he meets Szoboszlai. Rather than just tap the Hungarian’s hand and move on quickly, Liverpool’s No.38 comes in for a big hug while grinning from ear to ear.

Who got the better of Gravenberch vs Szoboszlai?

There was another clip of Gravenberch and Szoboszlai also doing the rounds after Hungary and the Netherlands eventually drew 1-1 on Friday.

Gravenberch has become well-known already this season for perfecting a move which sees him let the ball roll across his body while he turns an opposition player.

And while he must have seen this at the AXA Training Centre a million times, Szoboszlai was spotted getting done by a silky Gravenberch roll in the early stages of the game.

Ultimately, though, this was a better result for Hungary than it was the Netherlands. Although they rallied to claim a late equaliser – Denzel Dumfries heading home a Gakpo free-kick – the Dutch did not have their best day at the office.

Still, more confirmation that Gravenberch’s form is not a flash in the pan, while Szoboszlai appeared to have a decent enough game, too. They could run Liverpool’s midfield for years these two.
