Martin Zubimendi was Liverpool’s main transfer target in the summer, yet it now appears that Manchester City have entered the picture for the midfielder.

The Spanish international has emerged as a target for the reigning Premier League champions to replace Rodri, with the City maestro out for the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury against Arsenal last month.

With Zubimendi rejecting Liverpool to stay at Real Sociedad this summer, City could feel confident in their abilities to sign the Basque midfielder given how big an appeal the Etihad Stadium side could be for the La Liga star.

Yet Zubimendi has now shared how honest thoughts on City’s rumoured interest having already rejected Liverpool.

Speaking to the press whilst on international duty for Spain, Zubimendi revealed that he feels that the best thing to do is to remain at Sociedad despite new interest from City, a club many would consider the best in the world.

Zubimendi said when asked about City’s interest and if he would consider a move to Manchester: “My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times. In every market, teams come up. I think the best thing is to be at the club. Now I have a lot to give to Real Sociedad.”

With Zubimendi already rejecting Liverpool this year, it makes sense why the 25-year-old has once again said he is only focused on Sociedad, even with a club as big as City now in the mix to sign the midfielder in January.

And for Liverpool, Zubimendi’s comments could indicate that he will also turn down Pep Guardiola’s if City were to make an offer for the La Liga star, who could see out the rest of the season with Sociedad if he sticks to his word.

Zubimendi rejecting City would be huge for Liverpool in 2025

Although Liverpool’s need for a defensive midfielder is no longer as great as it was in the summer due to the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch, Zubimendi would still be an ideal signing in the position for the Reds in terms of having quality depth.

And if Zubimendi rejects City in January, Liverpool will receive a huge boost in their bid to sign the Spanish international, who at the end of this season could be interested in a move to the Premier League after one more year with Sociedad.

Indeed, Liverpool are an appealing club for a player like Zubimendi, who could become a star at Anfield, and the midfielder rejecting City would be big for the Reds in their quest to bring the 25-year-old to Merseyside.
