Lewis Koumas is regarded as one of Liverpool’s most exciting prospects, and the 18-year-old made his first full start for Wales last night against Montenegro.

Starting out in his favoured left-wing position, the teenage forward was named in Craig Bellamy’s starting XI as the new Wales manager got the first win of his tenure with a 2-1 performance away in Niksic, with former Liverpool man Harry Wilson stealing the show.

As for Koumas, though, the attacker was brought off at half-time as the Liverpool youngster endured a difficult night against Montenegro, where the teenager showed his lack of experience playing the senior game for Wales.

And the Welsh national media have since given their verdict on Koumas’ performance.

Koumas rated poorly but given the benefit of the doubt by Wales media

With Koumas only ever playing six professional games in his entire career, it’s safe to say that it wasn’t a surprise that the winger didn’t set the world on fire for Wales against Montenegro.

And this is reflected in how the Liverpool winger was rated by the Welsh media, with Wales Online stating that Koumas ‘some promising flashes’, with ‘more to come’ from the 18-year-old this season.

Y Clwb Pel-Droed had a similar verdict on Koumas’ performance for Wales, with the Liverpool working hard in the first-half yet not really having any moments to show his true quality on the ball.

Indeed, Koumas is very much at the start of his career for club and country, and whilst his full debut didn’t go to plan against Montenegro, the Liverpool youngster being there in the first place is a good sign of what’s to come for the winger.

Koumas could develop into Wales’ next big attacking star

With Gareth Bale long gone from the picture in Wales, Bellamy is in need of a new attacking superstar to get his nation excited about the future, and Koumas could be just that for the former Liverpool forward.

At 18-years-old, Koumas has much to learn and a long way to go in his development before he’s taking on the world for Wales and Liverpool, yet the early signs this season out on loan with Stoke City are promising.

And with Koumas now a full Wales international, the teenager could develop into the next big thing in Welsh football, with the forward having all the tools to become a real star in the game.
