Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool contract has been a big talking point, yet the defender could be close to resolving this issue once and for all.

Van Dijk recently told the media that he is keen to remain with Liverpool with the Dutch international’s contract due to expire next summer, along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Given how important all three players for Liverpool, many Red supporters are eager to see the trio sign new deals with the Anfield side, with Van Dijk still one of the best defenders in the world and the club captain.

And Anfield legend Phil Thompson has shared what could happen at Liverpool if Van Dijk were to sign a new deal.

Van Dijk staying could trigger Liverpool domino effect

Speaking on TalkSport, the pundit predicted Van Dijk signing a new Liverpool deal to trigger a domino effect of sorts on Merseyside that could lead to Salah and Alexander-Arnold signing contracts with the Reds.

Given the influence Van Dijk has at Liverpool, the defender committing his future to Arne Slot’s side could actually inspire the likes of Salah and Alexander-Arnold to follow suit and pen new deals with the Anfield side.

And Thompson believes the tactic could work, with the former Liverpool star saying when asked about Van Dijk’s comments earlier today: “Well, it’s nice, and it is something which is hanging over the club.

“We have made a good start and people are talking about how well we have played, but then it’s Trent has not signed, Virgil has not signed, Mo has not signed. If we can get our captain to sign a contract, it may be kickstart the other two to do likewise.”

Thompson’s theory could actually work for Liverpool

Thompson’s idea is one that sounds good on paper yet could be hard to execute in practice, yet given how big a figure Van Dijk is for Liverpool, the theory could actually work if the defender is the first to sign a new contract.

As we know, Van Dijk is one of the best defenders on the planet and a titan of a presence for Liverpool at the back, with the Dutch international one of the key reasons why Jurgen Klopp was as successful as he was for the Reds.

And Van Dijk signing a new contract would send a message to the likes of Salah and Alexander-Arnold that Liverpool is the best place for their careers, with Slot getting off to a great start already since succeeding Klopp.
