Liverpool had quite the uneventful summer transfer window even with a new manager being appointed in Arne Slot.

The Dutch coach succeeded Jurgen Klopp as Slot was tasked with what many felt like was an impossible job in carrying on the Liverpool legend’s legacy on the touchline by playing entertaining football at the highest level.

And after three games, Slot is doing just that, with Liverpool perfect in the Premier League with three wins from three and yet to even concede a single goal in the league this season.

Yet one Liverpool player has now hinted that he was blocked from leaving Anfield this summer.

Caoimhin Kelleher shares Liverpool exit plea after failed summer exit

Speaking to the press, Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher revealed that he wanted to leave Merseyside this summer, with the Republic of Ireland international hinting that he was blocked from moving.

Valued at £25m, Kelleher has been Liverpool’s backup keeper for some years now, yet even after the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, the Irish shot-stopper still wasn’t allowed to depart Anfield to become a number one elsewhere.

Kelleher said when asked about why he didn’t leave Liverpool: “I made it clear in the last few years, I want to go be a No.1 and play week in, week out. The club made the decision to get another goalkeeper. From the outside looking in, it looks like they have made a decision to go in another direction.

“My ambition has always been clear the last few seasons that I want to be a number one, playing week in week out. Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like it is 100% my decision but at times, it is not always in my hands.”

Liverpool messed up in not selling Kelleher this summer

Kelleher has been linked with a move away from Liverpool for what feels like forever, with the 25-year-old goalkeeper at a stage in his career where he needs to be playing regular football if he’s to ever develop into a top player.

And Liverpool messed up in not selling Kelleher this summer, with opportunities seemingly there for the Reds to offload the Cork-born talent for good and to pocket a healthy transfer fee in return for the Irishman.

Indeed, Kelleher is way past the point of being a backup keeper for Liverpool, and the Merseyside giants should have allowed the 25-year-old to leave Anfield had the right offer come along for all parties this summer.
