Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is ready to once again give his all for the Reds as they prepare for their first home match of the new season.

Van Dijk impressed against Ipswich, with the Liverpool captain keeping a clean sheet in the 2-0 win at Portman Road.

He is now looking for another victory against Brentford, with the Premier League clash against the Bees set to take place at Anfield.

Van Dijk could leave Liverpool for free next summer, with the centre-back’s contract set to expire at the end of the current season.

That would be a massive blow for the Merseyside club, with Arne Slot certain to want Van Dijk to extend his stay as soon as possible.

For now, however, Van Dijk is very much part of Slot’s plans, with the centre-back now making a promise to Liverpool fans as the new season begins.

Writing in the matchday programme, Van Dijk said: “As I say, I believe in the talent within this group, and it is our job to make sure that we continue to work hard and to improve each and every day.

“We know that last season didn’t end as we wanted it to, but we also know that there were a lot of things throughout the campaign that we can learn from and hopefully use going forward, as we pursue our aims.

“Those aims haven’t changed, as far as I’m concerned. We want to be successful; we want to compete until the very last day in every competition that we play in. And yes, we know it will be very difficult to do that, but we will try.

“I can promise each and every one of you that we will give everything possible to deliver a successful season, a team you can be proud of.”

Liverpool cannot afford to lose Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk has been one of the best defenders in world football since joining the Reds under Jurgen Klopp in 2018.

The Netherlands international has gone from strength to strength over the years, helping lead Liverpool to plenty of success.

Along with his stellar performances at the back, Van Dijk has also improved those around him, particularly helping youngster Jarell Quansah last season.

He now has another huge campaign ahead, with Slot set to rely heavily on his captain in the league and Champions League.

The Anfield faithful know just how important he is to the setup on and off the pitch, and losing him for free next summer would be a devastating scenario for all involved with the Reds.
