Liverpool are one of the biggest football clubs in the world and a team that the majority of players all aspire to one day play for.
Yet that doesn’t mean that the Reds always get what they want when it comes to the transfer market, with Liverpool having many deals infamously going up in flames despite virtually everything being agreed on, with the most notable example being Nabil Fekir.
With Liverpool missing out on Martin Zubimendi this summer, the trend only looks to continue under Arne Slot, who as of writing is yet to even complete his first signing since being appointed as the new manager at Anfield.
And Liverpool were seemingly close to landing one famous Premier League striker nearly ten years ago.

Liverpool failed in 2013 move for Diego Costa
Speaking to the Athletic, former Liverpool official Ian Graham revealed that the Reds made a move in 2013 to sign Diego Costa to partner Luis Suarez in the attack, with the Merseyside club trying to bring in the forward from Atletico Madrid.
However, Costa ended up signing a new deal with the Spanish club as the striker fired Atletico to the La Liga title, winning a move to Chelsea the following summer and becoming one of the most infamous forwards in recent Premier League memory.
Noted by John Obi Mikel via TalkSport as a ‘crazy’ guy, the prospect of Suarez and Costa leading the line for Liverpool during their peaks is nothing short of incredible, and such a reality almost came to be back in 2013.
Graham said when asked about Liverpool’s interest in Costa: “Can you imagine a Liverpool front line of Luis Suarez and Diego Costa? It would have been filthy! As it was, Costa ended up joining Chelsea the following year.”

Suarez and Costa in their prime at Liverpool would have been destructive
With Liverpool almost winning the Premier League title in the 2013/14 season, having Costa on their books as cover for Suarez and Daniel Sturridge would have been nothing short of destructive in the best possible sense.
This was a time when the then-Atletico star was one of the rising stars in world football and a forward who at times looked like one of the best strikers in Europe, with Costa having everything in his arsenal to cause maximum damage to his opponents.
And Costa playing alongside Suarez or Sturridge would have been a nightmare for opposing Premier League teams, with Liverpool that season already one of the most productive sides in front of goal in the division.
