Club now doomed to sell ‘outstanding’ player on the cheap and Liverpool could get him

Liverpool supporters are wondering whether their club is going to do anything in this summer’s transfer window.

With barely two weeks of the market remaining – and the Premier League starting on Saturday – the Reds have so far done exactly nothing in terms of incomings.

The kitty has been boosted this week, with Fabio Carvalho joining Brentford. But despite Carvalho’s exit and the prospect of more outgoings at Liverpool, there seems little expectation that the Reds will bring much in.

Quite what Arne Slot think about that remains to be seen. However, it’s inescapable that the Liverpool squad looks no better, and could even be worse, than the one that came up short last season.

Still, the Reds do have time to do something. And it looks like having missed out on Martin Zubimendi, they are now trying to push for another La Liga player.

Liverpool could get Giorgi Mamardashvili bargain

If you ask any Liverpool supporter, they will be adamant that if the Reds are to make just one signing this summer, then it should be in midfield.

Zubimendi had looked ideal for Slot in many ways and losing out on his signature will be a big blow for the new head coach.

One thing that Liverpool perhaps do not need right now is a new goalkeeper. Doubts over Caoimhin Kelleher’s future persist but for now he’s still a Liverpool player.

As a result, with Alisson Becker still the best goalie around and Vitezslav Jaros looking like an able choice, too, there seems no real need for the Reds to bring in another.

Nevertheless, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, that’s exactly what they’re trying to do.

They claim that the transfer of Giorgi Mamardashvili away from Valencia is now starting to ‘heat up,’ with Liverpool reportedly ‘preparing an offer’ for the 23-year-old.

The Reds are said to be ready to put around £26m on the table to buy Mamardashvili, while the Spanish club are trying to hold out for more like £34m.

However, with Valencia claimed to ‘need to sell’ for financial reasons and the Georgian’s agent now in Valencia to push through an exit for his client, ‘all the alarms’ have reportedly been set off at Mestalla.

As a result, Valencia are said to be ‘doomed’ to have to accept a lower fee than they’d like for Mamardashvili. They could reportedly end up meeting Liverpool halfway and accepting £30m for the goalie.

What about Alisson’s future?

While Mamardashvili looks like a really good goalkeeper who could perhaps be good enough to be a No.1 at Liverpool, this transfer will likely do little to excite supporters.

The reason for that is because if Mamardashvili joins, the likelihood that Alisson is edging closer to leaving increases massively.

Even if Kelleher does end up leaving, that would still be the case. Mamardashvili was called ‘outstanding’ by Ange Postecoglou on ITV during this summer’s Euros. He isn’t a goalkeeper for the bench.

Nevertheless, journalist David Lynch has reported that Alisson’s future is not in danger this summer. Even if the Valencia man does arrive, he will not leave.

What it could mean for next year, though, is hardly worth thinking about.
