Tyler Morton says Liverpool have got a young player who has been on ‘a different level’ in pre-season

It has been a productive pre-season for Liverpool’s young players out in America.

Owing to a large number of first-teamers being unavailable and away on holiday, Arne Slot took a youthful squad to the US.

There have been a sprinkling of star names such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah, but for the most part, the Liverpool squad has had a slightly fringe feeling to it.

While that is perhaps not ideal for key Liverpool players getting used to the ideas of the new head coach, it may be good in the long-term development of those who may otherwise have had less of a chance to impress.

Tyler Morton is one who has potentially benefitted. The 21-year-old has played in both Liverpool games so far in the absence of more senior players like Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

Tyler Morton hails Harvey Elliott contribution

Although Morton has had a little bit of action out in the US, the academy graduate would perhaps have liked to have more.

There is potentially a spot open in Slot’s midfield with Wataru Endo being put up for sale. But as of now, Morton maybe hasn’t quite grabbed that as well as he could have.

One player who very much has made the most of some bigger stars being away is Harvey Elliott.

Elliott delivered two sumptuous assists as Liverpool beat Arsenal 2-1. Starting both games so far in a more advanced midfield role, the 21-year-old looks suited to playing under Slot.

But despite Slot being a little critical of Elliott after the Arsenal game, Morton has gone the other way, claiming that the young man has been a joy to watch while in America.

“He’s different class,” Morton tells liverpolfc.com. “Different class as a player, different class as a lad.

“Everyone loves him and he is a brilliant footballer,” he adds. “To watch him play out there, everyone comments on it: he’s class to watch, he’s got something different to a lot of players.

“I don’t want to big him up too much! But he looked like a different level out there, so big credit to him and big credit to the team that helped him perform like that.”

Liverpool fans excited by Elliott

We’d argue that both Morton and Slot are right in their assessments of Elliott’s display against Arsenal.

There were times when the former Fulham youngster looked like the best player on the pitch and his assist for Fabio Carvalho in particular was excellent.

However, there were also times where you could see that Elliott could have done better, which is what Slot pointed out.

If the reviews are mixed, though, then the Liverpool fans get the final say. And it’s clear that supporters were excited by Elliott’s performance against Arsenal.

Now 21, it’s easy to forget that Harvey is still an exceptionally young player. He already has more than 100 appearances for Liverpool under his belt, but it seems like the best may be yet to come.
