Liverpool legend John Barnes was a favourite of many supporters through the 1980’s and 1990’s.
The Jamaican born winger was a terrific player, scoring 106 goals in 403 games across a 10-year career with the Reds.
For fans of that generation, Barnes is right up there in the greatest players in Liverpool history debates. And rightly so.
Not only was the 60-year-old a supremely talented footballer, though, he also had a penchant for music.
Collaborator in of one of the greatest football songs of all time – New Order’s ‘World In Motion’ – Barnes was also a key performer in the cult Liverpool FA Cup final song ‘Anfield Rap.’

John Barnes names dream Liverpool rap trio
In Anfield Rap, Liverpudlians John Aldridge and Steve McMahon aim to teach their non-Scouse teammates how to talk like them.
However, the likes of Barnes, Alan Hansen, Craig Johnston and even Kenny Dalglish have other ideas, imposing their own accents and ways of speaking onto Aldridge and McMahon.
It was made at a time when the influx of overseas players into English football had not yet happened. Had the song been coined today, Liverpool would have had so many more different nationalities to call on.
And if Barnes were indeed to make the song again, we now know which of the current Liverpool squad he would call upon to join him on the microphone.

Asked by The Daily Mail, to name who he would pick from Arne Slot’s squad to form a rap trio with, Barnes opted for Luis Diaz and Joe Gomez.
“I would probably go for Luis Diaz,” he said as first pick. “Being South American, he’s got a bit of a samba dance thing about him.
“And probably Joe Gomez, because he’s got a bit of rhythm as well,” Barnes added.
“He’s not scored a goal yet but I saw him that night (at the end of the season party) and he had a little side shuffle.”
Joe Gomez heading out of Anfield?
Although we love the sound of a Barnes/Diaz/Gomez hip-hop group, it may be that the former Liverpool winger will have to pick some new bandmates soon enough.
That’s because rumours have emerged on Wednesday that Gomez is open to leaving Liverpool.
The 27-year-old was reportedly close to joining Newcastle as part of the deal that would have taken Anthony Gordon to Anfield in June.
Although the deal collapsed, it’s claimed that Gomez is still not against the idea of joining a new club this summer.
Should that swap with Newcastle be resurrected, Diaz may also be on his way out. The Colombian could be the man who makes way for Gordon in the squad. Don’t start picking out any group names yet, Digger.
