Fabrizio Romano has said that Liverpool could now be set to miss out on a midfield target despite weeks of speculation.
Arne Slot has made signing a midfielder an important priority for the Anfield side this summer, with Liverpool losing Thiago Alcantara having not truly replaced Fabinho after his shock departure to Saudi Arabia last year.
With the likes of Adrien Rabiot and Matt O’Riley linked with Liverpool, a certain profile is being targeted by the Reds’ new-look transfer team, with Slot keen to leave a big imprint on the team heading into the new season.
Yet one player linked with Liverpool could now be heading to a European rival.

Joao Neves closing in on PSG move despite Liverpool interest
According to Fabrizio Romano, PSG have intensified their interest in signing Benfica wonderkid Joao Neves, who Liverpool have made a ‘top’ target this summer.
At 19-years-old, Neves has established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in world football, yet all signs now seem to suggest that PSG will be the club who end up signing the Portuguese talent this summer.
Romano posted on Instagram: “PSG send formal bid to Benfica to sign Joao Neves, talks are advancing. After personal terms fully agreed, as revealed earlier this week, Paris Saint-Germain advance on club side.
“Talks ongoing with Benfica for several days, an official proposal has been sent to progress on Neves deal. Joao wants PSG and he’s keen on working under Luis Enrique after director Campos presented his project.”

Liverpool need to make a last-minute push for Neves
Although Neves’ price-tag suggests that Liverpool could struggle to sign the Benfica talent, the Reds lose nothing if they launch a last-minute push to land the teenage midfielder.
Neves has shown for club and country in the last 12 months that he’s one of the most exciting prospects in Europe and a talent who could thrive in the Premier League with the right manager and club.
And Slot and Liverpool could be just that for Neves, who could be a better fit for the Reds over PSG, where wonderkids have more often than not failed to hit the ground running.
