It’s always interesting to keep track of where players end up in their careers after leaving Liverpool.

There has been a theme over recent years of those who choose to leave Anfield going on to tank at their future clubs.

This isn’t a general rule of course, but there have been plenty of examples of former Liverpool players who could never hit the heights of their years in red once they came to a close.

Philippe Coutinho is perhaps the best example of this. Coutinho has joined Vasco da Gama, his boyhood club in Brazil at the age of 32. Had he stayed at Anfield back in 2018, maybe his career would have gone differently.

Others have had some relative success, though. One of those to have won a trophy since leaving the Reds is now set to link up with upwardly mobile Italian side, Como.

Alberto Moreno set to join Como

Como have been in the news a fair bit recently. The club on the banks of the lake with which they share their name are back in Serie A for the first time in 21 years this season.

Their success has come on the back of a takeover by Indonesian owners Djarum Group.

High profile former Premier League players Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas and are also minority shareholders, while, somewhat bizarrely, Dennis Wise is an advisor to the board.

As well as being on the board, Fabregas is the club’s assistant manager. The World Cup winner is to all intents and purposes the face of the Como project.

As they transition to being a top-flight club once again, Como are on the attack to bring in some high-profile names. Raphael Varane looks set to join in what would be a huge coup for the Italians.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Fabregas and co are about to bring in another Champions League winner, too: former Liverpool left back Alberto Moreno.

“Como will sign Alberto Moreno on free transfer after he left Villarreal,” Romano reports on Friday morning via X.

“Exclusive story, confirmed… and Varane next.”

Cesc Fabregas a future manager in the making

Fabregas is not actually the manager at Como, that honour has fallen to Welshman Osian Roberts.

However, it feels like only a matter of time before the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder takes the plunge for himself.

From a Liverpool point of view, it would be fascinating to see whether Fabregas would be keen to take over at Anfield in the future.

Fabregas has hailed the Anfield atmosphere in the past and has even admitted that he’d have loved to play for Liverpool.

Fabregas said he dreamed of playing for Liverpool and if he does go on to be a top-level coach, maybe he can feel that from being on the touchline instead. If not, just ask Albie, he’ll have a story or two from his five years with the Reds.
