Former Liverpool player Jose Enrique made an embarrassing mistake after becoming a football agent

Liverpool players have been going on to do a variety of different things since hanging up their boots.

Although a footballer’s career is relatively short, most who have played at the top level should never have to work again.

However, still young and active, plenty want to keep going, sticking around the game if possible.

Some turn to punditry. Jamie Carragher is a good example of a Liverpool player who has become one of the very best in the business in that particular arena.

Others prefer to go down the coaching route. Xabi Alonso is proving how effective that can be, with the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard also following suit.

Jose Enrique embarrassed over agent gaffe

For those not keen on either punditry or coaching, there is another way of keeping involved in the game: agency.

With the likes of Deco becoming an agent and then a sporting director, this pathway is one that is perhaps becoming more popular with former players.

One with a Liverpool connection who is now trying his luck is former left-back Jose Enrique.

Since leaving Anfield in 2016, Enrique has become something of an outspoken critic. Clearly a big Liverpool fan, the Spaniard even recently got a namecheck from former manager Jurgen Klopp for some comments about the club.

But although he has also done bits of punditry here and there, it’s reportedly the agency game that Enrique is now involved in.

That’s according to Football Italia, who claim that the 38-year-old made a gaffe when trying to push the services of two players recently.

They report that Enrique attempted to offer Todd Cantwell of Rangers and Feyenoord’s Marcus Pederson to Italian side Lecce.

However, instead of sending the credentials of the pair to Lecce coach Luca Gotti, Enrique reportedly ended up sending Cantwell and Pederson’s Transfermarkt profiles to a parody Instagram page called ‘Luca Gotti reacts.’ Needless to say, the players haven’t been signed.

Better days ahead for Jose Enrique

Although this is a fairly embarrassing mistake from Enrique which has made its way into the public sphere, he’ll no doubt learn from the error.

Having had a good career in England and Spain, Enrique will surely have made some interesting contacts during his time as a player.

It’s worth pointing out as well that the former Newcastle defender called Liverpool’s signing of Ryan Gravenberch back in March 2023, six months before the Dutchman eventually joined.

“This player is ours amigo, Gravenberch,” Enrique said on a video stream at the time. “Amigo, it’s the same agent as me! Team Raiola! Amigo, we had a meeting with them, not long ago in London.”

It’s unclear whether Enrique was eventually involved in getting the deal for Gravenberch done. But the once outspoken pundit does seem to have disappeared a little from public view in recent times.

As he learns the agency trade he can perhaps become an ally for Liverpool in future deals. Keep plugging away, Jose!
