David Ornstein says Liverpool were looking into signing £45m player who Alan Shearer thinks is ‘fearless’

Liverpool have been moving very quietly in the summer transfer window so far.

With just six-and-a-half weeks until the season kicks off once again, the Reds are still yet to do any business at all.

That should not necessarily come as too much of a surprise. Liverpool are still getting used to the idea that Arne Slot is their new head coach and there’s been plenty of change in other areas of the club, too.

The summer international tournaments have also thrown a spanner in the works at Anfield. It has been difficult to get anything moving.

Nevertheless, FSG are wily operators who tend to move in relative silence in the transfer market. And according to journalist David Ornstein, they have been doing the same this summer.

Liverpool made enquiry over Anthony Gordon

As usual, there have been plenty of rumours to keep Liverpool fans occupied since the end of the season.

Some of those are possible to dismiss outright from a very early stage. But there’s always going to be others that have more legs.

Over the weekend, credible reports surfaced that Liverpool were looking into signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

The Magpies’ financial struggles were well known and they needed to make significant sales by Sunday. It seemed possible that a deal for Gordon could be struck.

However, Sunday’s deadline came and went with Newcastle having managed to get several more fringe players off the books. Gordon stayed put.

The interest from Liverpool reportedly still remains though, with Gordon’s head reported to have been turned. And speaking to The Athletic FC Podcast, renowned journalist Ornstein finally provided his take on proceedings.

“They [Newcastle] were looking into all sorts,” says the reporter. “The Anthony Gordon situation reluctantly might have been a route that they would have gone down.

“It was an arm’s length enquiry from Liverpool some weeks ago, he’s a player they admire,” Ornstein adds. “It then went quiet and came back to the fore. As Newcastle scrambled around they would have been looking into all manner of possibilities.”

Is Anthony Gordon to Liverpool still possible?

Although the PSR deadline has now passed for all clubs, the summer window still has a long while to run.

With it said to be ‘increasingly clear’ that Gordon would love to join Liverpool, it feels like Newcastle are not out of the woods on this one yet.

That being said, they are now under little pressure to sell. The 23-year-old could attempt to force a move, but even if he did, Liverpool would have to pay far more than the £45m Newcastle signed him for 18 months ago.

Instead, it feels more likely that the Reds will wait things out and see what the lay of the land is in six months or a year.

Gordon has been described as a ‘fearless’ player by Alan Shearer and it’s obvious what he could bring to Liverpool.

With just two years already left on his deal at St James’ Park, the Reds will no doubt come back again in due course. Maybe not this summer, but they’ll be back.
