How Ruben Amorim reacted to Sporting CP’s big winner last night was very interesting.
Last night everything was at stake for Ruben Amorim and Sporting CP. His club are on the hunt to win a second league title in three years, and may have taken the most significant step to achieve that.
Up against Benfica, who were only a point behind Sporting CP heading into the game, Amorim desperately needed a win.
Playing in front of their home supporters, Sporting got off to a perfect start as well. Sporting CP right-back Geny Catamo scored after just a minute.
But Benfica would fight back, getting an equaliser just before the first half to set-up a nail biting second-half.
The second-half saw a really end to end game. Both sides gave it their all, and tried to win the match. But it was Sporting CP, who would have the last laugh.

A dramatic winner for Ruben Amorim
A draw would not have been the worst result for Sporting. That meant they would have maintained their advantage by one point over Benfica, with a game in hand.
For much of the second-half, it looked like the game was heading that way as well.
But then up stepped Geny Catamo again, this time in the 91st minute. The right-back struck a wonderfully hit volley into the back of the net after receiving the ball unmarked from a Sporting CP corner.
It sent the stadium into ecstasy. Though Amorim on the side-lines didn’t get carried away. He was giving out instructions to his defenders, knowing there were still crucial minutes left to be played.
In the end, Sporting CP got a decisive victory that now puts them four points above Benfica, with still a game in hand. Having just seven matches left to play, Amorim’s side are now very close to lifting that league title once again.
What Ruben Amorim did after Sporting CP’s winner
After the winner, it was Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele who spotted Amorim talking to his defenders. That reaction to Sporting CP’s win is very telling of Amorim’s character.
Clearly, he is someone who is constantly vigilant and doesn’t lose focus even in the heat of the moment.
The 39-year-old is Liverpool’s favourite candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp for a reason. He’s got a proven track record and a clear vision. The way he controlled that match for Sporting CP will be very interesting for Liverpool.
Last night, he definitely proved that he was ready for a step-up to Anfield.
