Danny Murphy says some fans won’t like who he wants to see as Liverpool’s next manager

Liverpool are inching forward in their task to find the right manager to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds had seemingly hoped to bring in Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen. But after Alonso decided to stay where he is, the search has had to be recalibrated.

So far, that has reportedly led to five key names being in the running. With not long to go before a decision needs to be taken, that shortlist is about to be whittled down.

For some, none of the names being considered will come close to matching what Alonso could have brought to Liverpool. Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy is one of those who was strongly advocating for the Spaniard to succeed Klopp.

Having seen those dreams dashed though, Murphy has given his new take on who would be the best fit for Liverpool now.

Danny Murphy picks next Liverpool manager

It’s going to be really fascinating to see who eventually comes out as Liverpool’s top choice in the coming weeks.

Reports since Alonso stepped out of the running have suggested that Ruben Amorim could now be the man in with the most chance.

However, Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann continue to be linked, while Simone Inzaghi and Thiago Motta appear to be in the mix too, albeit as outsiders.

According to Murphy though, none of those would come close to offering Liverpool what Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou could. Postecoglou is reportedly not a candidate for the Reds, but Murphy believes his style of football would massively appeal at Anfield.

“Tottenham fans wouldn’t like it but the way Ange plays, that would be someone a lot of people wouldn’t mind seeing,” the pundit told TalkSPORT. “I know he’s a Liverpool fan, just throwing that out there!

“In terms of the football I’ve seen from Ange, I’d like to see that at Liverpool.”

Ange Postecoglou picks up more support

Murphy isn’t the first – or even the second – to proclaim Postecoglou as the perfect fit for Liverpool. In fact, by our count, the TalkSPORT pundit is at least the fourth to lend his backing to the Australian.

Back when Klopp first announced his decision to step down, another former Liverpool midfielder – Jason McAteer – named Postecoglou as his top choice to come in.

Then, last week, yet another man to have worn red in his playing days – Jermaine Pennant – suggested that the 58-year-old would also slot in nicely.

Finally, former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop claimed earlier this week that Postecoglou would be the closest thing to Klopp Liverpool could find. We’re not convinced to be honest and there’s no chance that it will be Ange, so it’s best to cut this kind of talk out now.
