If Ruben Amorim is appointed as Liverpool manager, he could make two obvious signings for the club.

There will be no Xabi Alonso coming to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. However, it could now easily be Ruben Amorim.

The 39-year-old Sporting CP boss is now regarded as one of the favourite candidates to succeed Klopp, and for good reason.

Amorim plays an exciting style of attacking football, which is very similar to Klopp’s gegenpresss in its high risk and high reward strategy.

On top of that, Amorim has also delivered proven results. At Sporting CP he won the club’s first league title in 19 years and is on course to repeat that feat this season, while also potentially winning another Portuguese Cup.

Not to mention Amorim also has a proven track record promoting young players. At Sporting CP he gave debuts to 25 players aged 21-years-old or younger during his four seasons so far.

Still young himself with plenty to learn and grow, he won’t be perfect. But he is as close as Liverpool can get to Klopp.

Where Ruben Amorim needs to sign players for Liverpool

But while there are a lot of similarities between Klopp and Amorim, the two are not the same. Amorim has his own unique ideas about football.

One of the notable differences between Amorim and Klopp is the the different formations that they use. Klopp has always preferred 4-3-3 during his time at Anfield.

However, Amorim prefers to play with three defenders at the back and use a 3-4-3 system.

Joel Matip’s expected departure at the end of the season will leave Liverpool with just four senior centre-back options, it’s quite a possibility that the Reds will enter the market for at least one if not two.

And if that will be the case there are two obvious candidates Liverpool could look to target, both of whom Amorim will know well.

Who Ruben Amorim could sign for Liverpool

One of those is Goncalo Ignacio, who has been linked with a move to Anfield for a while now, and who is a key player in Amorim’s system.

With the Reds definitely needing a left-footed and left-sided centre-back, Ignacio would make a lot of sense. He is essential to making Amorim’s offensive transitions tick, and would be a perfect fit for Liverpool.

Another potential target Liverpool scouts have followed recently who Amorim knows well is Ousmane Diomande.

The Ivorian is a young defender with a lot of potential, who has made great strides since working under Amorim. His speed, reading of the game and ability on the ball makes him a perfect fit for Liverpool as well.

Although, Liverpool are more stocked in the right-sided centre-back role where Diomande has played predominantly for Sporting, he is quite a flexible defender, who can play in other positions, which means the Reds may also consider a move for him.
