Bayern Munich already speaking to manager who’s ‘turning football upside down’, Liverpool want him too

Liverpool’s search for a new manager has so far been intertwined with Bayern Munich.

While the Reds are set to lose Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season, Bayern have decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel.

Having been the man who followed Klopp at Dortmund – and also took over at Mainz not long after Jurgen had left – Tuchel has always been closely associated with his compatriot. It’s a funny little quirk that their fates have joined up again.

Initially, it had looked likely that the two manager’s clubs would be battling hard for Xabi Alonso. However, with the Spaniard staying at Bayer Leverkusen, neither will get their top choice.

So, both have now had to turn their attention elsewhere. But according to a report from The Times today, that doesn’t mean their jousting is about to end.

Liverpool and Bayern battling again

Having missed out on Alonso, it seems likely that Liverpool will try to land Sporting’s Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese coach isn’t the only one on their shortlist, though. The Reds are seemingly looking at a number of different candidates.

One of them is strongly rumoured to be Roberto De Zerbi. And although journalist David Ornstein suggested over the weekend that De Zerbi is unlikely to be the man taking over from Klopp, The Times insist that he’s in the mix.

Liverpool’s interest doesn’t seem to be as far along as Bayern’s, mind you. It’s claimed that the soon-to-be dethroned Bundesliga champions have ‘put out feelers’ to gauge whether De Zerbi would be keen to join them.

That’s reportedly a result of the 44-year-old being the ‘frontrunner’ for the Bayern job. Other candidates are said to include Ralf Rangnick and a surprise potential return for Julian Nagelsmann.

In terms of Liverpool, De Zerbi is claimed to be ‘on the shortlist,’ but trailing current top candidate Amorim.

Will Liverpool fight for De Zerbi

At the moment, it seems unwise for Liverpool to reengage in another fight with Bayern. If De Zerbi is their preferred candidate and he’s open for the move, then that’s fine.

It actually leaves the door open for the Reds to get Amorim, who we think would be a much better fit at Anfield.

As we saw at Anfield this weekend, De Zerbi’s style of play does have its attractions. Klopp himself is clearly a fan, telling the BBC after Liverpool’s 2-1 win that the Italian is ‘turning the football world upside down.’

But Jurgen has already ruled himself of having any say in who will succeed him in the dugout. And we’re not quite so convinced that De Zerbi has what it takes. So, it seems like everyone could finally get what they wanted here.
