With a new transfer structure in place, much is expected of Liverpool in this year’s summer window.

During his previous spell at the club, Michael Edwards became renowned for getting the absolute most out of the Reds’ transfer budget.

Employing a data-led approach, Edwards and his team were able to identify some slightly under the radar signings who went on to be huge hits at Anfield.

With the 44-year-old now directing matters again and Richard Hughes assisting him, Liverpool fans will be excited to see what comes next. And according to reports in Portugal this week, there’s at least one player being targeted already.

Liverpool targeting Joao Neves

As per Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Liverpool are paying close attention to the situation of Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.

Neves, who is only 19, is reportedly attracting the attention of ‘sharks’ all over Europe. Liverpool are said to be one of these, and are claimed to be ‘very attentive’ to how the Benfica man has been playing this season.

The Reds have reportedly identified the midfield as an area they need to bolster for next season, and seemingly see Neves as the ideal fit.

Benfica are said to be aware of the interest of Liverpool, as well as a number of other, notable European giants. Although ‘nothing concrete’ is claimed to be on the table just yet, the Lisbon side are supposedly bracing themselves for bids at the end of the season.

As a result, Benfica are reportedly attempting to increase the release clause in Neves’ contract.

Currently sitting at around £103m, his club are hoping that the Portugal international will sign off on a clause for £129m instead. No progress is said to have been made on this, though.

Who is Joao Neves

This is not the first time Joao Neves has been rumoured to be on Liverpool’s radar. The teenager looks set to be the next big star off the Benfica conveyor belt and his name has been doing the rounds before.

You can see why, too. Still only 19, Neves is already a full Portugal international with four caps under his belt.

Having played 65 games for Benfica, he has become a key part of Roger Schmidt’s side. At Benfica, that is often a pre-cursor for a big career at one of Europe’s top clubs.

One man who certainly seems to think Neves is destined for huge things is Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes was quoted by SportTV via The Mirror this week saying that he ‘loves’ the youngster’s game. Watch this space.
