In the end, Liverpool will only have themselves to blame for what transpired against Manchester United. For much of the second-half Liverpool had United in the palm of their hands. They dominated the home side at Old Trafford.
However, they just couldn’t find their edge in front of goal. That cost them in the 90 minutes, with United equalising late on. But Liverpool fought back with a sublime Harvey Elliott goal in extra time to take the lead.
What should have happened after was Liverpool holding onto their lead. But the Reds remained wasteful in front of goal and in the end, poor losses in possession allowed United to crawl their way back into the game.
This was a young side, and Liverpool will learn from the mistakes they committed. And while even though he wasn’t perfect, one Liverpool player who Jurgen Klopp has called ‘exceptional’ recently definitely showed he has really gone under the radar lately.

Harvey Elliott with an impressive cameo vs Manchester United
When Liverpool needed a hero, Harvey Elliott stepped up for the Reds in extra time. The 20-year-old strike from long range was superbly struck and while it took a deflection on the way, it was hit with so much power that Andre Onana couldn’t get anywhere near it.
In general Elliott showed promise in the game. He was the only one instigating chances for Liverpool. Surging forward and picking up the ball in dangerous situations.
With his goal today, he now has eight goal contributions in his last 10 matches for Liverpool, registering six assists and scoring two goals. That’s an incredible run of form for the Liverpool midfielder. Yet it’s largely gone under the radar.
In total, he has eight goals and 10 assists for club and country in all competitions this season. He averages a goal or assist 0.60 per 90 minutes.
With those numbers, Elliott should be in contention to receive an England call-up at senior level. But he’s largely been ignored. Today against United should have been another reminder for Gareth Southgate why the Liverpool midfielder deserves to heading to Euro 2024 later this year. Sooner or later the England boss cannot ignore him if Elliott continues to play like he has.
