In football there are so many sliding door moments. Scenarios that could have changed the entire outcome of a game, or even the trajectory of a club or player. These are the moments you look back on and cherish if they turned in your favour or you look back and rue for years to come if they were against you.
Football transfers in particular are like that. Behind the scenes, there are so many deals that come close to being completed but in the end fall through for one reason or another. For Liverpool, one of the most notable recent examples would have been Nabil Fekir.
The French international seemed like he was on the verge of being signed by the club. However, in the last minute Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign him. It was a move if you look back at it now that Liverpool will have no regrets about.
However, when it comes to another player, who has since gone onto sign for Arsenal for £30m (Sky Sports), Liverpool’s sentiments will be very different. Especially since he could have been the perfect signing for Liverpool.

Martin Odegaard training with Liverpool
The player in question is Martin Odegaard, who almost a decade ago was one of the most sought after teenagers in world football. At the time, a host of clubs wanted to sign Odegaard. Liverpool was among them and even invited the Norwegian prospect to train with Brendan Rodgers’ first team alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho.
However, in the end Odegaard opted to sign for Real Madrid, and then later signed for Arsenal. The rest is history. Odegaard has since established himself as one of the best and most creative players in the Premier League. He is also the captain of the Gunners, and is still very much in his prime years at just 25-years-old.
It would have been brilliant to see him in a Liverpool shirt though. He would have been perfect under Jurgen Klopp, and we would have loved to have seen how his career would have developed under the German. Perhaps in a parallel universe we may know the answer. But in this realm, he is Arsenal’s gain.
