32-year-old Liverpool player’s future should have now been decided with Michael Edwards’s return

Michael Edwards will bring about change to Liverpool. But most importantly, he will bring about continuity as well. Having worked a decade at Anfield until 2022, he knows the club inside and out and is definitely the best man to oversee the post Jurgen Klopp era.

One of his most important jobs will be to find a successor to Klopp’s throne. Undoubtedly, the entire future of Liverpool will hinge on that appointment. But that won’t be the only important decision Edwards will have his say on.

Edwards will also decide on contract renewals and will have to make several important decisions on the future of those players with expiring contracts. The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are both on short-term deals and Edwards will need to decide whether to keep them or to sell and cash in.

But before all of that, Edwards has to make a decision about a cult Liverpool legend, who has been at the club for many, many years now. However, his contract will expire at the end of the season, and Edwards may have an obvious decision to make.

What Michael Edwards will do with Joel Matip

When it comes to Joel Matip, his fate should now be sealed with Michael Edwards’ arrival. Matip’s contract expires at the end of the season. He has been injured since the beginning of the campaign, and is unlikely to make a return before the end of the season.

Given his injury track record and age was already unlikely that Liverpool would have offered him a contract extension. However, with Edwards now returning that possibility has diminished even more.

During his time at the club, Edwards has never been afraid to make big decisions. He allowed Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can to depart on free contracts. He’s also always been very reticent in offering long-term renewals to players over the age of 30.

For those reasons, Matip’s time at Anfield should be up at the end of this season. The Liverpool defender in all likelihood will move onto pastures new.
