Far too often Liverpool fans are negative about the actions of the club’s owners. Now there is no denying FSG are perfect. Not everything that they have done at Liverpool has worked or gone down well. However, in general FSG’s policy is sustainable and successful.
Sure, Liverpool haven’t won as many trophies as they may perhaps feel they should have done under FSG. But they have done things the right way. They have never invested too much money and have never gone beyond their means.
Sometimes that has meant making tough decisions and letting key players go. Such as Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona. But in the long-term, those decisions have always paid off. Liverpool were always able to find ways to replace departing players, and improve the squad.
They’ve also been efficient in finding under the radar targets for the right value. Players who may not be coveted by everyone else but are equally as valuable.
Jamie Carragher on Liverpool’s finances
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Overlap, Jamie Carragher praised the way Liverpool conduct business. He explained that he has noticed the club doesn’t ever come up in the conversation about being in danger of breach Financial Fair Player guidelines.
“What I would say on this is you look at the clubs now and we talk about how many clubs are close to FFP – I don’t even know where Liverpool are but they are never in that discussion which I’m happy about,” Carragher said.
Carragher also highlighted Liverpool’s wage policy as one of the club’s strengths.
“We always talk about transfer fees, but when we say they should have brought this player or that one, Liverpool spend what they bring in. Liverpool’s wage bill is massive. It’s above Man United or not far away from City’s.
“So when we talk about where has the money gone. People look at Arsenal and say they have spent hundreds of millions, Liverpool’s wage bill is doubles what Arsenal’s is – or it was a couple of years ago. A lot of Liverpool’s expenditure goes to the players, the money is there to be seen, they are spending what they bring in.”
There can be no doubt about it FSG has created a well-oiled machine in Liverpool. The Reds may not compete for every big signing but they are still very effective in the business that they do. Much of that is thanks to FSG, and the structure that they have in place.
