Liverpool’s midfield rebuild could have gone better last summer. Every single midfielder that the club has brought in has so far made an impact at Anfield. But while that was pretty much expected from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, it wasn’t necessarily what many expected of Wataru Endo.
The Japanese international arrived from Stuttgart as a slightly underwhelming signing. Liverpool had just failed in their attempt to sign Moises Caicedo. Amidst all of that Endo was seen as a bit of a panic signing. But if he was it’s the best panic signing in the history of the game.
The 31-years-old has settled in seamlessly at Anfield and has become one of the best players in Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge of the club. Endo has dominated the midfield and has provided stability in front of the back four.
His ability was on display against Manchester City at the weekend as well with Liverpool fans voting him as the Man of the Match. Now Dominik Szoboszlai has opened up about what it was like to play against him back when they were both in the Bundesliga.

Dominik Szoboszlai on Wataru Endo
Speaking to reporters in Liverpool’s press conference ahead of Sparta Prague tomorrow (as per This is Anfield), Szoboszlai was asked about Wataru Endo, and about his thoughts when Liverpool signed the Japanese international. And the Hungarian revealed his difficult experience coming up against Endo in the Bundesliga.
“I played against him when he was at Stuttgart. He’s a player that’s everywhere,” Szoboszlai said.
“It feels like you passed him then you turn around and he’s already there! I can understand how people are thinking ‘how is he there when I just passed him’ but I’m happy to have him in my team.
Szoboszlai was also asked whether he thinks Endo has been a good signing. And while he refused to give an answer he did say that Endo has been an ‘important’ player for Liverpool.
“It’s not my decision to decide if it’s a good signing. He shows he’s important for the team, this is the most important. You’d have to ask the gaffer if he was a good signing or not.”
It’s good to see Endo being recognised in this way by his teammates. He has truly been a fantastic signing and has demonstrated that ability to frustrate his opponents on the pitch numbers times now.
