‘Fantastic’:… Jamie Carragher says Liverpool had a brilliant partnership forming vs Man City today

Liverpool battled to a hard fought 1-1 draw against Manchester City this afternoon.

The Reds had to dig deep to get their point. Shorn of a number of regular starters, Liverpool came back from a goal down to keep City at bay.

Missing players at both ends of the pitch, the Reds midfield was always going to be key against a full strength Pep Guardiola side.

In the end, they came up big. Alexis Mac Allister was quite possibly the game’s outstanding player. Having scored the penalty that brought Liverpool level, the Argentine was also tidy in possession and tenacious in the tackle.

And speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Jamie Carragher praised Mac Allister’s performance, while also giving a nod to another top performer – Wataru Endo.

I thought he [Mac Allister] was brilliant today,” Carragher raved. “The partnership with him and Endo was fantastic.”

Looking at the line-ups before the game, you got the feeling that Liverpool’s midfield were really going to have to stand up at Anfield.

The defence in particular was badly depleted. Without Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker, it was an unfamiliar looking back line for such a big game.

Further forward, Liverpool also had to make do without Mohamed Salah, who wasn’t deemed fit enough to start.

As a result, a lot was riding on how Mac Allister, Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai performed.

After taking a bit of time to get themselves into the game, the trio came back into it a big way. Mac Allister and Endo especially were absolutely everywhere for the Reds.

It was fitting that the No.10 was the man to come up with the equalising goal, because he ran the show for Liverpool.

The odd one out was perhaps Szoboszlai, who just didn’t seem to get up to the intensity of the game. There were too many sloppy passes, not quite enough drive about the Hungarian and he was rightly subbed off midway through the second-half.

Szoboszlai will get better, though. Maybe there’s still a little rustiness from his recent injury. As for Mac Allister and Endo though, they’re just getting better and better and better.
