Alan Shearer on Alan Hansen

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Alan Shearer gave out special praise to Liverpool legend Alan Hansen. The former Newcastle United forward revealed he faced Hansen during the end of his playing days and described him as ‘magnificent.’

“He was a great player, Alan. I played against him towards the end of his career but watched him in the 80’s and he was magnificent,” Shearer said.

It’s true Alan Hansen is a legendary figure in Liverpool history. Before Virgil van Dijk was regarded as the icon as he is today, Liverpool’s greatest defender of all time was considered to be Hansen. A player who dominated football in the 1980s, Hansen played a major role in helping the Reds be one of the best teams in the world during one period in time.

Hansen was not only an excellent defender, but he was also one of the first modern types of players who was also great with his feet. He would be accomplished at bringing the ball forward. Elegant and technically gifted, he was also hard as nails and physically imposing. No wonder Shearer has such appreciative words for him.
