£40m midfielder surpassed Jude Bellingham’s record last week, he’d be brilliant for Liverpool

In the end, after years of pursuit, last year Liverpool had to surrender defeat to Jude Bellingham. It became apparent that the Reds could simply not afford to lure Bellingham to the club, when Jurgen Klopp’s side needed at least three of four new midfield additions.

At the time, Liverpool’s decision irked a lot of Liverpool supporters. Many of us had been sold the Bellingham dream. So to come to terms with Liverpool not pursuing him any further, was a big blow.

However, in hindsight, this season has shown that Liverpool’s decision may have been a wise one. Sure, Bellingham has really kicked on at Real Madrid. He’s undoubtedly become one of the best midfielders in world football. However, Liverpool haven’t done badly either.

Not signing Bellingham meant Liverpool could bring in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, for roughly the same price at the Real Madrid midfielder. Both of them have gone onto do very well in their early Liverpool careers so far.

But even so, Liverpool should learn from that Bellingham mistake. With the club now targeting another Championship teenager, who even surpassed Bellingham’s record last week, Liverpool should go about things differently this time.

Archie Gray is on Liverpool’s radar

Archie Gray has been linked with a £40m move to Liverpool recently. He is regarded as the next big thing in the Championship. He has even caught the eye against the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez lining up against Chelsea recently.

Gray has also now surpassed Jude Bellingham’s record in the Championship having become the teenager to have played the second most minutes in a single season as per Leeds United journalist, Joe Donnohue.

There’s a lot to admire about Gray. At 17-years-old, he is already very tactically mature. He’s capable of playing both as a right-back and as a midfielder, and has played in both roles for Leeds United this season. As a result, he has  even drawn comparisons with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool failed to make a move for Bellingham early on in his career while he was at Birmingham City. This time around, the Reds shouldn’t make the same mistake with Gray. He could be a fantastic addition for the club in the summer transfer window.
