Jurgen Klopp has praised Cody Gakpo for the amount of football the Liverpool forward have played in recent days after last night’s clash against Southampton.

The 24-year-old winger started both the League Cup against Chelsea as well as yesterday’s FA Cup tie at Anfield, with Gakpo leading the line as Liverpool remain light in the attack.

Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah remain out on the treatment table, with Gakpo last night being joined by academy star Lewis Koumas and Harvey Elliott in the front three.

And speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Klopp was full of praise for Gakpo, who impressed last night against the Saints as the most senior player in the Reds’ forward line at Anfield.

Whilst Koumas and Jayden Danns were the ones who stole the headlines in the 3-0 win against the Championship side, Gakpo’s physical herculean effort to power through the game was inspiring.

And with Elliott also starting the match, it once again showed how dedicated Liverpool’s players are amid their current injury crisis, with Gakpo likely to start again on the weekend against Nottingham Forest.

Klopp said: “Cody [Gakpo] and Harvey [Elliott], who in other circumstances would never have played. Harvey played 120 minutes a few days ago! So, what these two boys did there is absolutely incredible.”

Liverpool need injured players to return soon

Liverpool’s injury crisis is arguably the most impactful out of any top-six Premier League club, with the Reds without the majority of their star players in recent weeks.

Yet like always, Klopp has managed to weather the storm in incredible fashion, somehow winning the League Cup with an XI half made up of academy players and now progressing to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a similar team.

Yet whilst the stories of Koumas and Danns are brilliant, most fans will agree that senior faces need to return if Liverpool are to challenge for the Premier League title, with a number of big-name players yet to make their long-awaited comeback to action.
