Development is never a linear process. It’s full of ups and downs and ebbs and flows. It’s very rare that a young player shoots straight to the very top. Most of the time, just like in life, they must first overcome obstacles and challenges along the way.
Liverpool’s academy is thriving at the moment. The club has a plethora of young players who have been integrated into Jurgen Klopp’s first team squad and who have gone onto thrive at senior level. Including catching the eye in the Carabao Cup final recently.
There are others as well who have been doing well on loan. From the likes of Luke Chambers to Tyler Morton and even Fabio Carvalho recently.
Overall, the future is bright at Anfield, in large thanks to the club’s academy, where excellent work has been conducted over the last few years. But not everyone has had an easy time recently. There’s one Liverpool loanee who has really struggled. However, last night he was back on the pitch and playing against a Premier League opponent.

Billy Koumetio back on the pitch
Billy Koumetio hasn’t played a senior competitive football game since December 10th until last night. The 21-year-old Frenchman has suffered from bad fortune, not being a regular at Ligue 2 side USL Dunkerque, which saw him recalled to Liverpool.
The Reds then proceeded to loan him out again to Blackburn Rovers. However, Koumetio hasn’t been able to fight himself into the first team reckoning. That means he had to wait to make his debut until last night, coming on against Newcastle United in the FA Cup.
Koumetio spent around 48 minutes on the pitch and managed to help Blackburn take the game to a penalty shoot-out. In the Newcastle were victorious in the shoot-out, but Koumetio can be pleased with his efforts.
Liverpool will hope this will be a turnaround in the 21-year-old’s fortunes. In the past, Barry Lewtas has described Koumetio as an ‘unbelievable’ talent [The Athletic]. However, his last few loan spells have not gone according to plan.
