There is always going to be an allure of the past. There is a nostalgic sense in all of us. Something that yearns for the forgotten days. An era that has now passed us by. In football this yearning for the past can be more intense than maybe even in everyday life.

The career of a footballer is fleeting. It passes by in an instant. Blink and you will miss it. Players come and go on a regular basis at football clubs. We’ve seen legends depart, and new legends born in an endless, perpetual cycle.

Liverpool are fortunate enough to have been blessed by some iconic players over the years. Players who became adored by fans and idolised by many. Now Gary Lineker and Micah Richards have been talking about the top five players they would like to see back playing for Liverpool from the past, and their names are quite impressive.

Lineker and Richards on Liverpool legends

Gary Lineker and Micah Richards were speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, and decided to deliberate on the idea of which three former Liverpool players they would add to the current squad.

The two of them both had different answers. Lineker went with: “Gerrard.” As his first pick, and then Richards added: “Dalglish, Hansen? Hansen and Van Dijk!”

“Ian Rush would have to be there. Suarez. Take your pick!” Lineker concluded.

Even in that short list there are so many players it’s hard to choose from. Liverpool have had some of the best players in world football represent the club. Players like Xabi Alonso, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino were not even mentioned. And they’re just from the last decade. There were plenty more who left an indelible mark for Liverpool – including the likes of Michael Owen or Robbie Fowler, who were both sensational in their prime.
