Jurgen Klopp has now shared what he told Liverpool’s youngsters before bringing them on in Sunday’s League Cup final against Chelsea.

Injuries have plagued the Reds in recent weeks with the Anfield side heading into yesterday’s final at Wembley Stadium with a number of key players out, namely Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

With the bench filled with mainly academy players, Klopp was forced to turn to a number of youngsters against Chelsea as Liverpool’s clash against the Blues went into extra-time, with four academy graduates being brought on.

And speaking to ESPN, Klopp has now revealed what he told Liverpool’s youngsters before bringing them on, with Bobby Clark, James McConnell, Jayden Danns and Jarell Quansah all being introduced.

With Conor Bradley already starting the match, it was one of the best days in the history of Liverpool’s academy with the Reds using so many graduates in what could be Klopp’s final cup final appearance for the Anfield side.

The German manager said when asked about Liverpool’s youngsters: “I told them you have to be cheeky like a kid but you have to defend like a man and that’s exactly what I saw.”

Liverpool were left with bare bones heading into Sunday’s cup final in London, with the Reds so depleted that Chelsea were considered favourites for the tie.

Yet the Anfield side are never ones to back down, and Klopp’s decision to lean in on youth options on the bench was influential in Liverpool bringing the League Cup back to Merseyside.

The likes of Clark and Danns were impressive in the final stages of the exhausting match, and Liverpool fans are now sound of mind knowing that the next generation of players coming through can handle the big occasions.
