‘Amazing’… Luton boss Rob Edwards makes claim about Liverpool fans after last night’s game

If rivals fans did nothing but check the scoreline from Liverpool’s win over Luton Town last night then they’d think it was simply a routine win.

In reality, it was anything but. Wednesday night at Anfield was pure chaos. With the Reds missing so many players, they pulled a brilliant and battling performance from the fire.

Part of the reason they were able to dig so deep was because of the ferocity of support from within the stadium itself. From minute’s 45 to 60, Liverpool’s home has hardly been louder all season.

This was something not lost on Luton manager Rob Edwards. In quotes from journalist Chris Bascombe on X, Edwards hailed the effect the Reds’ fans had had on their team.

“We made them angry didn’t we?” joked the 41-year-old. “After a really good first half, in the second half we saw Anfield. Full throttle, they suffocated us and their fans were amazing.

“It was like the Kop was sucking it in.”

Anfield awakens to lift Liverpool

How Liverpool needed Anfield last night. Edwards’ line about the Kop ‘sucking the ball in’ is of course a well worn trop in football. Plenty don’t really believe it to be true.

But what a difference it makes to the team when the fans create the ruckus they did yesterday.

In the first-half, it looked like the hardest thing in the world for the Reds to put the ball in the back of the Luton net.

No matter what they tried, it wouldn’t go in. With all of the injuries and the Hatters going a goal up it really had the feeling of being one of those nights.

Had it carried on in that way, it would have been a very damaging night indeed for Liverpool’s title hopes.

Jurgen Klopp had even become visibly irritated with the crowd in the first-half. Without too much to shout about, you could feel the anxiety surrounding the stadium.

For whatever reason though, things just switched after half-time. Gone was the tension in the air. Instead, the roar was deafening whenever Liverpool got on the ball.

Battling valiantly up until that point, you could see the energy sap from the Luton players. From the moment Virgil van Dijk nodded home the equalising goal, a big Reds win felt inevitable.

It may have only been Luton, but this was a special, special evening at Anfield. Soak it in, Reds. There aren’t many left under Jurgen.
