Jurgen Klopp admits he has a real doubt for Liverpool ahead of the Carabao Cup final vs Chelsea

With another three points collected for Liverpool in the Premier League last night, attention now turns to the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds are set to face Chelsea on Sunday in a repeat of the 2022 showpiece, which Liverpool won on penalties.

Heading into the game, the big talking point has been the remarkable injury list Jurgen Klopp is having to deal with right now. Nine first-team players missed yesterday’s win over Luton Town.

Asked by BBC Sport for an update on the situation after the 4-1 victory, Klopp admitted that he ‘doesn’t know’ who will be back fit for Sunday.

“I really don’t know,” said the Liverpool manager. “I don’t even know if these boys can go again, that’s the situation we had.

“Last time after the game I couldn’t believe the situation today would be like that. So we wait. We wait until we get further information and Friday we will think about how we play the final.”

Klopp no idea on Liverpool fitness

Amid the euphoria of last night’s comeback win to go four points clear at the top of the table, it has been forgotten that Liverpool are not out of the woods yet.

They came through last night with something to spare in the end. But by the sounds of what Klopp is saying here, we might not have anyone added to the squad for Sunday.

Realistically, you’d have to say that that would now make Chelsea favourites to lift the cup.

Clearly, the Liverpool XI that took to the field last night, as well as Andy Robertson in particular off the bench, are still a good team.

But you just feel it’s missing that little bit of firepower up-front especially. Having put in a shift on Wednesday, can they all go again on Sunday, too? We just don’t know yet.

Obviously, as Ryan Gravenberch said yesterday, the injuries do represent a chance for those stepping in. Gravenberch is one who did well last night and will be looking to kick on again at the weekend.

But in reality, you feel like Liverpool do need a couple of reinforcements.

In that respect, we know that a number of players already have no chance of making the Chelsea game. It seems that Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah are maybe the most likely to return. However, again, Klopp’s update is not encouraging there.

Like Jurgen, we’ll just have to play the waiting game until the weekend. Everything crossed, Reds.
