Andrea Pirlo was one of those players who you could just watch over and over again in his prime. He made football look easy. The way he glided on the pitch, and sprayed passes from left to right. He was the definition of coolness on the football pitch. Everything he touched turned into gold.
Over the last two decades, Pirlo was definitely one of those players who set the benchmark for what is to be expected from a midfielder. In his glittering career, he represented three giants of Italian football in AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.
His honours are as distinguished as the best players of all time. Pirlo won the World Cup, the Champions League twice and the Serie A six times in his career. There are few players in world football who can compete with that horde of trophies. Simply put, Pirlo was special. One of a kind. Although an Italian manager seems to think he may now have an heir to the throne. And that heir is currently playing for Liverpool.

Marco Rossi on Dominik Szoboszlai
It’s no secret that the Hungarian international manager, Marco Rossi, is a big admirer of Dominik Szoboszlai. The Liverpool midfielder practically grew up under Rossi’s guidance in the senior national team and is now captain of his country.
Rossi has followed his career very closely from when he was still a teenager. That means the Italian manager is more qualified to speak about Szoboszlai and his qualities than most people. And recently he has been speaking to Italian outlet Sampnews24 about how Szoboszlai’s qualities resemble Andrea Pirlo, and why he could become the ‘next Pirlo’ if he played in a deeper position on the pitch.
“If he wants to, he can be the next Andrea Pirlo,” Rossi said.
“He kicks the ball perfectly even fifty or sixty meters, he handles the ball well, he sees the field very well, he is fast and now he is strengthening Liverpool. He is free to play as an attacking midfielder in the national team. When he touches the ball, he has such a quality that if he was ten or fifteen meters back, his play could make an even bigger difference.”
These are interesting comments from Rossi. Szoboszlai has played most of his career in a more advanced midfield role. However, at academy level, he did often play as a number six. Maybe in the future he could transition back into that role again.
