Sheffield United trying to keep hold of 19-year-old prospect as Liverpool prepare move

Liverpool have their eye on a highly rated young player from Sheffield United.

Over recent years, the Reds have become very good indeed at picking up top talent from their rivals across the country.

Harvey Elliott and Kaide Gordon are two good examples who were brought in from Fulham and Derby County respectively. Bobby Clark, Trey Nyoni and even James McConnell were also signed up from the youth teams of English clubs.

Now, according to The Daily Mail, Liverpool could be looking to get their hands on one more. They claim the Reds could be plotting a raid on Sheffield United for goalkeeper Luke Faxon.

Faxon, who turns 19 today, has reportedly been offered a new contract by United, who clearly want to keep him.

However, they’re said to face huge competition to keep hold of the stopper. With Liverpool joined in their interest by both Manchester’s City and United, Faxon is hot property.

Liverpool eyeing up Faxon

Liverpool aren’t short of young goalkeepers in their underage squads. They currently have a number of players who will all be hopeful of eventual first-team involvement.

However, it doesn’t appear as though any of them are necessarily thought of as potential regulars in the senior side.

The closest is probably Marcelo Pitaluga, who is out on-loan in the Irish Premier Division this season. Another is Harvey Davies who has actually been having a slightly rough time at Crewe Alexandra.

With Alisson Becker hopefully still around for a long time yet, there’s no reason for Liverpool to be alarmed by any of that. In all likelihood Alisson still has a good four or five years at least as the Reds No.1.

Beyond that, it remains to be seen which direction Liverpool will go in. Davies is one who has openly commented on his desire to make it as a regular at Anfield. But that’s easier said than done.

One who did make it of course is current back-up Caoimhin Kelleher. And with Kelleher seemingly looking to move on soon, there could be a spot opened up.

For now though, none of Liverpool’s young contingent look ready. It would be a long shot, but maybe that could open the door for someone like Faxon.

If the Reds decide to sign players from rival academies, it tends to be because they see them having first-team potential. All of Elliott, Gordon, Clark and McConnell have already played to various degrees under Jurgen Klopp.

More bought from elsewhere, such as Ben Doak and Conor Bradley have, too. Meanwhile Nyoni looks like he won’t be far away either. So, if Faxon does end up joining, don’t be surprised to see him jump to the top of the goalkeeping queue.
