After a bounce back victory at the weekend, hope has been renewed that Liverpool can go on and win the Premier League this season.
It would be the perfect ending to Jurgen Klopp’s brilliant reign as Reds’ manager and would put an end to the monopoly Manchester City have over the division.
But on the back of last season’s disappointment, few people saw a title charge coming from Liverpool. Least of all Rio Ferdinand, who told TNT Sports via The Daily Mail last night that he’d never have pegged the Reds as potential winners at the start of the campaign.
“I didn’t expect Liverpool to be up there, doing what they’re doing, top of the league,” admitted the Manchester United legend.
“I thought they’d be getting Champions League but I didn’t think they’d be pushing Man City again, I thought it was going to be Arsenal going toe-to-toe with Man City.”
Ferdinand surprised by Liverpool improvement
With 14 games of the Premier League season to go, Liverpool are most certainly in a title race. There’s still time to fall away of course, but the home stretch is not too far off now.
With that in mind, it’s absolutely crucial that the Reds keep momentum up and win their next three games.
Facing Brentford this weekend before a home game with Luton Town and a trip to take on Nottingham Forest, they are three match up’s Liverpool should be favourites for.
If they can get nine more points on the board and stay at the top of the division, they then face Man City at Anfield on Matchday 28.
The way City are going, Liverpool simply have to win that. If they can come away from that game top of the table, then real belief will start to emerge.

After what we all experienced last season, that would be a really nice surprise. Having fallen away so dramatically in 2022/23, it had looked like the Reds – and Klopp – might need two or three years to put things right.
But as Ferdinand says, it’s the absolute mark of Jurgen that he’s been able to turn it all around so quickly. The new players have helped, but there’s little doubt who’s the driver of this success story.
Of course, there is a chance that Klopp comes away from his final season at the club empty-handed. It wouldn’t be the first time heartbreak has been suffered under the German.
But right now, Liverpool are right in it. And that’s a delightful surprise.
