Liverpool’s academy doesn’t always get every decision right. As much as the club’s system is thriving right now with exciting young talent continuing to emerge at first team level, sometimes players will fall through the cracks.
This might be the case with U18 Hungarian international Patrik Farkas. The 17-year-old spent a year and a half playing for Liverpool at academy level, but he ultimately left the Reds to join Blackburn Rovers in order to play in his favoured central midfield position.
Joining Blackburn in 2022, the club’s academy coach, Michael Cribley, described Farkas as a very talented player in an interview with Nemzeti Sport.
“Patrik is a very technical player in all respects, who handles the ball equally well with both feet . He reads the game perfectly, is able to score goals or create scoring opportunities for his teammates,” Cribley said.
“Patrik is a very talented footballer who we have been watching for a long time. We are very happy that he chose Blackburn Rovers because he is a real team player. In addition to his good technical skills, he is also in an excellent state of fitness. Now that he has entered our training program, we hope he can develop even further, and after he becomes a scholarship holder of our academy next year, we will be able to deal with him even more, and hopefully in time he will be able to reach a professional contract as well.”

Patrik Farkas making his mark against Liverpool
Farkas has been proving Cribley’s words right this season. The 17-year-old is in excellent form for Blackburn having scored twice and registered three assists from midfield in eight games so far.
At the weekend he also showed that against his former side finding the back of the net against Liverpool’s U18 team. In typical gegenpressing fashion, Farkas pressured Liverpool’s midfielder to win the ball, and then made a surging run into the box to score.
This was not his first goal contribution against Liverpool either. Earlier this season he also registered an assist against the Reds U18 team.
Very highly rated at Blackburn’s academy, Rousing the Kop understands he’s regularly involved in first team training at the club. He has aleady signed a professional deal at Blackburn which comes into effect in June. Our sources understand Farkas is closesly monitored by several clubs.
Clearly, a fantastic talent he is yet more proof that Liverpool’s academy is one of the best in the world.
