Journalist says Liverpool can sign £73m player next year, he’s got a release clause

Liverpool already have their eye on a potential transfer target for 2025.

Up until last week, Reds fans would still have expected Jurgen Klopp to be in charge heading into the 2025/26 season. In terms of his contract, it should have been Klopp’s final year at the club.

But last Friday Jurgen turned that all on its head. Now, who knows exactly who will be planning Liverpool’s transfer business at the end of the campaign, let alone in 18 months time.

Despite that uncertainty though, journalist Christian Falk has claimed that the Reds are still in the market. Writing in The Daily Briefing yesterday, Falk reports that Liverpool are one of the sides ‘lining up’ to trigger Lois Openda’s RB Leipzig release clause in 2025.

“Lois Openda is considered unsaleable in Leipzig this summer,” says the journalist. “But he has an exit clause from 2025 for €85m [£73m].

“Interested parties from England are already lining up: West Ham, Brighton, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Chelsea. The attacker has a contract in Leipzig until 2028.”

Liverpool eyeing Openda

Although there is huge uncertainty around the club at the moment, hopefully not too much will change in regard to Liverpool’s transfer strategy.

Of course, the players targeted have to fit into what the manager is doing on the pitch. A new manager is likely to bring a change of tactics, so there’s no use signing a Jurgen Klopp player to slot into a Xabi Alonso side, for example.

But the Reds have always employed a data-led approach to new additions. Up until last summer, Klopp’s influence was not hugely needed.

Those systems should remain in place, meaning that the data reigns supreme.

Given previous links to Openda, it’s fair to assume that the 23-year-old is a player who has been flagged as being of potential.

Even with a new sporting director and manager on board, that data isn’t going to change.

It’s easy to see why Openda would be flagged as someone worth watching. Since joining Leipzig in the summer, the Belgian has scored 17 goals in 28 games.

On the back of a 21-goal season in France with Lens last year, and 24 with Vitesse in the Netherlands in 2021/22, he’s showing consistency across different leagues.

The price-tag is still enormous. But Openda could be ready for the Premier League come 2025. Liverpool should be in the running.
