Roy Keane shares what’s he’s noticed about Jurgen Klopp on the touchline this season

Jurgen Klopp’s reasons for leaving Liverpool appear to be related to the manager feeling burned out and de-energised.

After more than eight years in the job, Jurgen seems to feel as though he simply can’t go to the well again for the Reds. In most supporters’ eyes, that’s okay, he’s given everything for the club and deserves to go out on his terms.

But according to former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, Klopp doesn’t look like a manager who’s no longer got the appetite to go again.

“I don’t look at him on the sideline and think he looks tired,” Keane told The Overlap. “I’ve not been seeing him every week, I look at him and Pep and it does help if you’re winning every week, but they are the two managers who always look full of energy. They look bright.

“Some managers you can look at it and think they haven’t slept and if you’re winning every week it does help.

“But we still don’t know what’s going on with the manager inside and with his family, and saying it’s every day, travelling in Europe, challenging for trophies, you’re competing with a brilliant Man City team and it has to take its toll.”

Keane gives Klopp verdict

On the face of it, there’s no arguing with Keane’s general point. Part of the reason Klopp’s announcement last Friday came as such a surprise was because he had looked reenergised this season.

Had the decision been made last term, it would have been much more understandable.

Jurgen cut a frustrated figure as his team toiled to a fifth placed finish and few would have been shocked to see him step away.

But after a summer refresh, the 56-year-old looked and felt ready to go again. His team are currently playing a vibrant and intense brand of football and the manager mirrors that in many ways.

Having said that, maybe Klopp is feeling refreshed simply because he knows that he’s now in the home striaght.

Without the burden of having to go again and again and again, he’s simply enjoying what’s left of the job. No more worrying about transfers, about pre-season tours, about contract negotiations.

Instead, Jurgen can focus on doing the part of the job he loves – being with the players and winning football games.

It’s this stripped back happiness from Klopp which feels like it could really aid Liverpool in their hunt for glory this season. It’s time to leave it all out on the table. Beyond that, Jurgen can crash out over the summer and look ahead to what’s next.
