Today has suddenly turned into one of enormity for Liverpool and their supporters.

This morning, Jurgen Klopp publicly announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season. Who saw this coming, then?

It’s devastating news for a club which Klopp has come to be synonymous with over the past eight years. Already, the reaction has been pouring in.

Some of that has come from Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, who spoke to TalkSPORT upon hearing the news this morning.

“I’m amazed,” admitted the pundit. “I just think the demands of that job, it’s one of the best jobs in the world if you get it right and he has done that. It would appear he has got a team again but it’s just the toll it takes on the individual.

“When I look at Jurgen Klopp he is such a perfect fit for Liverpool cause he is on it, he’s at it. He’s aggressive, he’s emotional and confrontational but that takes a toll. The pressure of being a manager at a big football club are enormous.”

Souness amazed by Klopp exit

Souey isn’t the only one completely reeling this morning. We just did not prepare for this.

How do you prepare for the exit of a man who has delivered so much over such a long period? In terms of football management in 2024, Jurgen has been at Liverpool for an absolute age.

Ultimately, it seems that that may be what is preventing him from continuing further.

As a former Liverpool manager himself, Souness is well placed to comment on the pressure of the job. And it certainly does come with a few.

Although Klopp had looked reenergised ahead of this season, perhaps the difficulties of 2022/23 just made him rethink his position.

Of course, Liverpool fans will respect the decision. Jurgen has earned the right to out on his terms and he was always going to.

But still, the sadness will linger for some time to come.

And it isn’t only Jurgen either. Pep Lijnders had long been thought of as a possible replacement for Klopp, but he too is leaving the club along with his head coach. Sad, sad times. Amazement, sadness, grief. We’re feeling them all now.
