‘Massive’… Joe Gomez says one Liverpool player will go down ‘in the history books’ for what they’ve done

In the last year or so there has been a lot of changes at Liverpool. Changes which have meant that Joe Gomez is now one of the longest serving players at the club.

The 26-year-old has been at Liverpool since the beginning of Jurgen Klopp taking over, and even before that. He’s seen the good, the bad, and everything else in between. And it’s crazy to think he is still relatively young when it comes to defenders – with plenty more years left at the top.

Despite having injury problems, he’s always been a key player in the squad. Someone who can step in and cover multiple roles. As he has proven this season.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Gomez also spoke in glowing terms about club captain, Virgil van Dijk. The Liverpool defender has formed a close bond with Van Dijk on the pitch and made his appreciation clear, declaring that the Dutchman will go down in the history books.

“It’s apparent he’s like a big brother to me,” Gomez said. “Since he came to this point, he has been a massive part of my journey on and off the pitch. He’s going to go down in the history books. What he’s done and his ability. How he has transcended that now into being a captain and a leader is massive.”

Gomez also revealed that over the course of the last few years, he has also learned a lot from Van Dijk.

“I will definitely look back and reflect on having a chance to be in a team with people like Virg and like Mo, but for me having Virg as a centre half and learning from him constantly, indirectly and directly, it’s been massive. I have taken so many little nuggets and ways of dealing with games and defending from him. And then more than anything just getting on well with him as a person, we like some similar things and it’s been nice to go through this journey with him.”

It’s good to see Gomez speaking so highly of Van Dijk. The two of them have formed a close bond on the pitch, but it seems like there is a mutual appreciation off the pitch as well.
