There are several defenders on Liverpool’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window. Jurgen Klopp simply needs to add depth to his department and naturally the club’s scouts will have drawn-up a long shortlist.

Who ultimately makes the cut remains to be seen. There will be many considerations taken into account. From age to ability and profile. But of course, one of the most important factors will also be the financials.

Under FSG, Liverpool have always operated on a tight but safe budget. So the more value you can get for less, the better it is. Which is why the latest name being linked with Liverpool may have a very attractive advantage over other potential centre-backs.

According to German Sky Sports reporter Patrick Berger, Liverpool linked Ko Itakura has a release clause valued at around just £8.5m to £13m which becomes active in the summer.

Itakura is a 26-year-old Japanese centre-back, who the club’s scouts have followed recently. He is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga when fit. So the fact that he is available for such a low transfer fee is a huge plus.

However, there will be some question marks. Itakura’s injury history is of a concern. Even at such a low value, Liverpool will have to ask themselves if that risk is really worth it?

If the Reds feel confident that his injury problems are past him, then certainly the Japanese international would be a superb option.
