The FIFA Mens Player of the Year award was handed out among many other accolades in a ceremony in London on Monday night. There were no real surprises in the winners with Lionel Messi claiming yet another personal award.

However, the night did throw up some interesting discoveries. As it’s commonly known, the FIFA Player of the Year award is voted by players, managers and journalists. More specifically, every country’s international manager, captain and one designated journalist.

This means there were a few Liverpool players involved in the voting, including one who made a surprise choice in Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai Erling Haaland choice

As per Hungarian outlet M4 Sport, Liverpool’s 23-year-old midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai voted for Haaland as his Play of the Year – with Lionel Messi coming in at second place in his selection.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk, who got his vote courtesy of being the Netherlands’ international captain, voted vice versa with Messi coming in at first place.

Szoboszlai’s choice is not really a surprise. Earlier this week, the Hungarian had already made it clear he wanted Haaland to win the award.

His friendship with the Manchester City forward is no secret, and it stems from their Salzburg days – where they were roommates. They now also live close to each other in a private neighbourhood in the North of England.

However, in the end it was Messi, who swept up the trophy yet again.
