18-year-old says he’s now being told to join Liverpool, after claims Reds are watching him

Liverpool fans have been urging a talented young winger to join them, after links emerged with the Reds.

As always, Liverpool are on the lookout for the best talent in world football. According to reports from last month, this led them to take a look at Hacken forward Momodou Sonko.

And now, the 18-year-old has spoken out on claims that Reds scouts travelled to watch him in the Europa League. Interviewed by Swedish outlet Sport Bladet, Sonko was asked about what his friends think about being linked to the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona.

“I have some Liverpool fans and some Barca fans. They want me to go to the club they’re cheering for,” admitted the Sweden U19 international. “It’s kind of funny. I get a lot written to me from my friends. It’s fun in the beginning but it can be too much too.”

Sonko was also asked how he’d react if Jurgen Klopp were to pick up the phone and ask him to come to Anfield.

“If he were to call privately, I would laugh. It’s pretty unlikely,” replied the youngster. “It’s easier for him to reach my agents than me. I haven’t gotten that call anyway.”

Sonko laughs off Reds interest

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Sonko isn’t interested in a move to Liverpool. It sounds purely like a bit of banter between friends.

With all due respect for Hacken, playing for the Reds must feel a fair way from turning out for the Wasps.

Although they punched above their weight and landed themselves in the Europa League, the Gothenburg-based club are tiny in comparison to Liverpool.

Their stadium, Bravida Arena, holds a capacity of just 6,500. It’s hardly Anfield.

As a result, young Sonko must feel a fair way away from turning out at some of Europe’s top stadiums.

So, it’s good to hear that he’s keeping his feet on the ground. Some youngsters would get decidedly carried away to hear that some of the continent’s big boys are tracking them. But not Sonko.

That shows a good attitude, and is sure to impress Klopp, should he call the teenager.

With the Swedish top division currently in its off-season, Liverpool will have to wait a few more months to watch Sonko again. If he continues to do well at Hacken, those calls to switch to Anfield will grow louder.
