Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been praised as he attempts to win AFCON with Egypt.

Salah is set to miss the next month or so for Liverpool. As captain and leader of his nation, it’s an important moment for the 31-year-old.

And with the tournament now underway – and Egypt’s campaign set to kick off today – Mo has been hailed by former Everton striker Yakubu.

Speaking to The Mirror, the Nigerian had some nice words to say about Liverpool’s No.11

“Salah has won African Footballer of the Year twice,” Yakubu explained. “He is just so good. He’s still one of the top legends in Africa, not only now but of all-time.

“He’s just so consistent for Liverpool and is scoring so many goals. Egypt are strong and they also have many other great players.”

Yakubu praises Salah impact

Although he’s a former Everton player, it’s good to see that Yakubu doesn’t hold back in his praise of one of Liverpool’s greatest ever.

With Salah, rivalry goes out of the window. It’s impossible not to recognise just how good the Egyptian is.

As Yakubu mentions, Mo has a claim at potentially being the greatest African ever to play the game. But the one thing that’s truly missing for that to be the case is an AFCON title.

Then Liverpool forward Sadio Mane strengthened his own claim to being the best of all time by securing a first ever trophy win for Senegal two years ago.

Salah was beaten in the final that day and will be extra determined to go one better this time.

Whether he can do that will perhaps depend on his teammates. Yakubu suggests that Salah’s supporting cast is a strong one, but in truth, other nations looks better placed than Egypt.

Senegal will be hoping to defend their title and still have a good, if ageing, squad.

Meanwhile, Nigeria are always a threat, while Ivory Coast may fancy their chances on home soil and with a strong looking squad too. All to play for then, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Good luck to all, but we’ll be rooting for Mo.
