Jurgen Klopp was spotted taking a seat amongst his players on Liverpool’s bench last night.

During games, Klopp is rarely seen away from his technical area. The manager will occasionally sit, but more often than not he’s on his feet and on the prowl.

That’s why, with Fulham the visitors at Anfield in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg, it was a shock to see the cameras catch Jurgen on the second row of the Liverpool bench.

As spotted by X account Watch LFC, the Reds boss clearly had a very important point to get across to young Owen Beck.

With Liverpool having just got the second goal to lead 2-1, the television cameras cut to the home bench. There was Klopp, sat next to Beck, animatedly ranting something towards the youngster. Beck’s reaction is interesting, too. The 21-year-old looks at Klopp, listens intently and nods.

As there were still 15 minutes left to play, the natural conclusion was that the manager was imparting some final instructions to Beck before bringing him on. But, bemusingly, that never happened. The left-back stayed on the bench. We’d love to hear what was going on here.

We’re happy to stand corrected here, but we don’t think we’ve ever actually seen this from Jurgen before.

To see him giving instructions to substitutes obviously isn’t uncommon. But to physically go and sit next to player and engage him in a deep discussion while the game is going on? Never seen that.

That Beck was the player chosen for this lecture makes it all the more intriguing.

The Welshman has been recalled from a season-long loan spell at Dundee recently, and may have expected to feature last night.

But with Joe Gomez continuing at left-back instead, maybe Klopp has just seen something on the training pitch that needs work with Beck.

It seems likely that that’s what triggered his impromptu discussion with the young defender. He saw something that he can actively explain to Beck in-game, so went and did it.

From the outside, it might look a little strange to some – Klopp really was animated. But we love this. After a dismal year last year, our boss is thoroughly energised about this team. His passion and enthusiasm is inspiring to see.

Beck will have no doubt taken a lot from his little tete-a-tete with the Liverpool boss. Hopefully he can put whatever was said into practice and get out on the pitch soon.
