Liverpool U21s have been given an injury scare following defeat to Athletic Bilbao last night.
The Young Reds were in action in the Premier League International Cup at the academy on Wednesday, losing 3-1 to the Basque side.
And according to the Liverpool ECHO, the result wasn’t the only reason for Barry Lewtas to be concerned.
They report that forward Tom Hill was forced off with an injury after just eight minutes of the game. Having been plagued by fitness problems over the past few years, it was another blow for Hill.
Thankfully, the issue doesn’t appear to have been too bad this time around. The ECHO report that the 21-year-old had merely rolled his ankle, labelling it ‘not as bad as first feared.’
Nevertheless, Hill wasn’t able to continue, as a Lewis Koumas goal wasn’t enough to save the U21s from a loss. To rub salt in the wound, former Liverpool academy star Elijah Gift was on the scoresheet for Athletic.
Hill limps off for Young Reds
Hill just cant seem to catch a break at Liverpool. The forward was a player of some promise before an ACL injury in 2020 ruined his progress.
That isn’t to say that he isn’t still a decent prospect, but it’s clear by now that he won’t make it to the Reds first-team.
Despite that, there was recently some suggestion that Hill is still on Jurgen Klopp’s radar.
The manager made a late intervention to make sure he was in the squad that travelled to play Union Saint-Gilloise in December.

But although it had seemed liked Hill might be in-line for a first senior appearance since 2019, the youngster remained on the bench in Belgium.
Unless something drastic happens, you’d imagine that’s the last we’ll see of the U21s star in the Liverpool first-team.
Turning 22 at the back end of this year, it’s high time that Hill kicked on with his senior career. Hopefully he can get over this latest little setback quickly and get back to lighting up the Premier League 2.
There’s a good career ahead of this young man, but it surely won’t be at Liverpool. Get well soon though, Tom.
