Liverpool should be very interested in Premier League transfer rumour emerging last night

Liverpool should be keeping a very close eye on Brighton’s latest movements in the transfer market.

The Seagulls have become renowned as one of the best recruiters in Europe over recent years. From Alexis Mac Allister to Moises Caicedo to Kaoru Mitoma, Brighton rarely miss.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano last night, they may now be on the verge of securing another one.

Romano claimed that Brighton are well on the path to securing the signing of left-back Valentin Barco from Boca Juniors.

Seeing as Liverpool have also been linked with Barco, this should have piqued the interest of the Reds. But given where he’s going instead, it’s unlikely that Liverpool will be too deterred.

Should Barco follow the path the likes of Mac Allister have trodden already, he’ll be at one of the Premier League’s big boys in a matter of years.

Brighton ready for next project

The reason Liverpool should be closely watching Barco at Brighton is that they could well need a new left-back in the next two or three years.

We all love Andy Robertson and can’t wait to see him back fit. But turning 30 in a couple of months, the Scot isn’t going to keep going forever.

Kostas Tsimikas is an able deputy for now, but perhaps isn’t quite of the profile to succeed Robertson when the time comes.

Should Barco take to Brighton and do well, he could very well be exactly the right player at exactly the right time.

Currently only 19, the Argentine won’t be the finished article just yet. But if there’s one thing the Seagulls excel at, then it’s turning rough diamonds into polished gems.

Passing through the finishing school at Brighton is by now a well established ritual. Prove you have what it takes at the Amex before moving on to one of the country’s elite teams.

Obviously, not all of the players who excel on the South Coast have been able to effectively make the next step up. But in Mac Allister, Liverpool seem to have found one who hasn’t had that trouble. Given that the Reds’ No.10 has already spoken well of Barco, that’s a decent looking sign.

Of course, the caveat to all this is that the Seagulls don’t often sell their players on the cheap. In the two or three years it takes Liverpool to need a new starting left-back, Barco’s price may have sky-rocketed. Nevertheless, if the Reds weren’t truly interested before, then they should be now.
