Liverpool have always concentrated on getting the club’s transfer business done over the summer rather than January. That’s unlikely to change this month. Although the club will always be attentive to the market and will pounce if an opportunity presents itself.

In the meantime though there is still a lot of things going on this month including the African Cup of Nations – where Africa’s best international teams will compete for the ultimate prize.

As usual Liverpool will have scouts present at the tournament – it’s common practise for the club to follow what is going on. And there will be players on Liverpool’s radar participating in the tournament as well.

One of those could be Nigeria’s Victor Boniface.

Victor Boniface is ‘interesting’

Boniface currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen and he is on fire for Xabi Alonso’s side this season. The 23-year-old has 24 goal contributions in just 23 games so far.

Recently, Jurgen Klopp has even referred to him as an interesting player ahead of the club’s game against Union SG.

“Good team. Lost good players and got a good team together again,” Klopp said in his press conference as per This is Anfield.

Before he then went onto refer to Boniface, who departed Union SG last summer.

“Really interesting strikers [left], who are doing really impressive stuff now in other leagues.

“And doing again that well [without them] is really special. I think the way the club is set up is just really good.”

The fact that Klopp has hinted at Boniface as being an interesting player is intriguing. He doesn’t normally refer to players like that in his press-conferences. Which leads us to assume that Boniface may be on the club’s radar.

At AFCON, Nigeria will always be regarded as one of the favourites and Boniface is expected to play a starring role alongside Victor Osimhen. This could be an excellent opportunity for the club’s scouts to continue monitoring the player, and see how he adapts to different environments and challenges.

He is valued at £35m according to Transfermarkt. At that price, he would be a bargain for Liverpool. Though it’s expected Bayer Leverkusen would probably demand a lot more considering Boniface is on a long-term contract until 2028.
