Liverpool have seemingly decided which club Fabio Carvalho will join on loan this month

It was no surprise to see Fabio Carvalho return to Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window. He had endured a fairly fruitless six months at RB Leipzig on loan with limited first team appearances.

Carvalho played a mere total of 360 minutes with the German side, and started three games in total. With positional rivals like Xavi Simmons ahead of him in the pecking order on permanent deals, Carvalho was never favoured.

The decision to recall him was therefore the only sensible solution for the club. There was no use keeping him sitting on the bench at Leipzig for another six months. He could just as well do that at Liverpool working under Jurgen Klopp – and learning a lot more.

But that’s unlikely to be the case. Liverpool are expected to send Carvalho out on loan once again this month and there’s already been a surge of interest in the 21-year-old.

Carvalho to make return?

Among the interested parties most likely to secure Carvalho’s signature is Fulham according to German outlet Bild.

If correct, this would be an interesting move. Especially, with Liverpool set to face Fulham in the League Cup later this month.

But on a personal level returning to familiar surroundings, while staying in the Premier League could be the best for Carvalho’s development. At Fulham, he should be surrounded by people who know him well, and the club’s coaching staff behind the scenes should create an environment for him where he can rediscover his confidence again.

It was under Fulham manager Marco Silva that Carvalho really broke into the first team at Fulham and played his best football. Rekindling that relationship could be vital for Carvalho’s development at this stage of his career.

At the same time, Carvalho will also stay in a competitive team, with Fulham one of the surprise packages in the Premier League at the moment. He will play at a high level, against tough opponents and that will better prepare him for a return to Anfield. Especially, in comparison to going out on loan to another Bundesliga club or potentially the Championship.
